Tutoring sessions

Sometimes it is difficult to tutor students in psychology. A lot of learning psychology is memorizing the basics in order to understand more complicated concepts that will arise in future classes. Most of the students i have seen so far are students that are taking a general psychology class in order to fill a gen. ed. requirement, so their hearts are not always in the science of psychology itself. A lot of them just want to do well enough in the class and move on. So i have struggled with getting them interested enough in the material to want to learn about it. I try and relate what we study to their lives to show them that psych has a lot of real-life application if you study it in the right way. Learning about psychology can actually help you understand yourself and the people around you better.
In terms of success, the students i have encountered have been extremely willing and excited to learn. They have shown tons of effort and they keep their attention on the task at hand the entire time. One particular student seemed to really understand what i was explaining to her, she mentioned that she understood it much better than she did before coming to the tutoring session. She said that she felt more ready for her test the next day. I considered that a success because I helped the student get a better handle on the material beyond just helping her memorize.
